St. Mary’s Secondary School is proud to be a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. In recognition of the work we are already doing to promote diversity and inclusion, we have applied for Yellow Flag status — a national award that celebrates schools committed to equality and intercultural understanding.
The Yellow Flag Programme involves progressing through an eight-step process, which includes implementing an Anti-Racism Policy, developing an Action Plan to build on existing initiatives, and establishing clear procedures for addressing racist incidents. At the heart of the programme is student leadership, with our Diversity Team playing a central role. This team meets regularly throughout the year and currently includes 50 students who actively support and participate in school-wide events such as Stand Up Week, Intercultural Day, and Traveller Recognition Day.
The Yellow Flag also encourages schools to engage with the wider community, extending the values of inclusion beyond the classroom. At St. Mary’s, our Diversity and Inclusion Officer and Home School Liaison Officer serve as the link teachers supporting this important work.
St. Mary's Diversity Code
In St. Mary's Secondary School, we don't tolerate ignorance.
We celebrate empathy and equality.
We are committed to create a safe space for all,
Where nobody is scared to express or be themselves,
Where people know that their culture will be appreciated and valued.
We will always advocate for all our students,
Their well-being is our top priority.
Our zero tolerance to injustice will forever stand.
Dennis Feeley.
