Green Schools

St Mary’s is a registered Green School and a member of the Irish Environmental Conservation School Clubs.

St Marys was awarded a Green Schools Flag in May 2015 in Waste Reduction and Recycling.

We are at the moment working on our second flag which is the Energy Flag.

The Green School’s team consists of members from First year to Leaving Certificate.

It is headed by St Mary’s Green School’s Co-ordinator Ms. Wall.

All students are encouraged to participate. Students in Transition Year and Fifth year use it for the voluntary work module that is required for their Gaisce programme.

What we recycle?

In St Mary’s we recycle

  • batteries
  • mobile phones
  • printer cartridges
  • paper cardboard
  • plastic bottles
  • plastic lids (caps)
  • tin cans

The students fortnightly go down to the local town to collect batteries from the businesses whom they have formed strong links with. These batteries are sent to WEEE Ireland whom donates the money made from them to the Lauralynn Children’s Hospice. In September 2015, St Mary’s was one of two secondary schools in Ireland that was awarded a certificate, a laptop and sports equipment by WEEE Ireland for our great efforts in recycling batteries.
