The school is fully committed to giving its students a very real sense of involvement and representation in its daily life and decision-making processes. To this end, we also have a number of Student Leaders/Mentors.
Our mentoring system has been established to help First Year students integrate into the school and to help them mature and deal with ongoing issues throughout the year. Mentors have traditionally been selected from the ranks of Fourth Year students after application and interview by a panel external to the school. Once selected the mentors are provided with professional training – this year under the auspices of North Connacht Youth Services. Twenty mentors were selected and trained. Each mentor is assigned four students with whom they meet regularly throughout the year. It has been found that the preparation, training and experience has been extremely beneficial for all concerned.
Other duties of the Student Leaders include:
- To assist school staff in certain administrative tasks e.g. distributing notices, collecting forms, parent-teacher meetings
- To act in a manner befitting the school’s tradition and good name when discharging all responsibilities
- Any other duties within reason, that may arise from time to time upon request from senior management
